Position summary

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Obervatory of Columbia University invites applications for one or more Lamont Research Assistant, Associate or Professor positions with expertise in fundamental research on basic earth sciences, and the demonstrated ability to apply this expertise to topics in the broad field of earth resources. For example, basic science expertise could include research on thermodynamics and kinetics of

water/rock reaction, dynamics of subsurface fluid transport, chemical and physical processes of rock fracture, solid earth geophysics, remote sensing, or similar fields. This expertise should be coupled with an established record of applying this knowledge to resource exploration (onland or at sea), extraction of materials critical to the economy (currently, most urgently, materials needed for the clean energy

transition and for fertilizer), sustainable sources of fresh water, natural and applied greenhouse gas capture and storage, geologic aspects of low-carbon energy sources (geothermal, geologic hydrogen production and extraction, etc.), environmental impacts of resource extraction, and/or similar applications. In addition to Lamont, Columbia University hosts many scientists, engineers and policy specialists working on

related topics, including the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences in the School of Arts & Sciences, the Department of Earth & Environmental Engineering - and several others - in the School of Engineering & Applied Science, the Climate School, the Global Center for Energy Policy, and the School of International and Public Affairs, all offering many opportunities for synergistic research

collaboration. The selection committee is interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their excellence in research and service, to the diversity and excellence of our academic community. The successful candidate will join a world-class community of researchers with opportunities for transdisciplinary collaborations
