The candidate at the rank of Assistant Professor will support a focused research program under the direction of Dr. Katherine Burdick and the Mitochondrial Psychobiology Group at Columbia University. Reporting relationships are outlined and clarified below. The candidate will assist and collaborate on exploring how applied physical energy inputs (light, electromagnetic fields) influence mitochondrial biology,
cellular and physiological states, and human experiences. Applied energy-based technologies are increasingly used in clinical and broad health care settings—including neuroimaging and neuromodulatory techniques—yet their biological mechanisms and integration into biomedical science remain underrecognized and underdeveloped. Examined with an adequate level of scientific exploration and translation efforts, these
energy-based technologies have the potential to enhance medical and psychiatric care. The Mitochondrial Psychobiology Group provides established platforms for quantitative bioenergetic assessment across cellular and human models. Key Job Responsibilities: There is a critical need to rigorously study these effects, and to translate and communicate findings in a way that enables adoption within psychiatry and
across the biomedical sciences. - Co-develop a shared experimental and conceptual framework linking energy dynamics to health and disease. - Disseminate findings through peer-reviewed publications and scientific conferences. - Develop workshops and interdisciplinary forums to introduce biophysical approaches to
the field of psychiatry and other audiences. - Expand collaborative networks to position the biophysics of energy as an emerging pillar within biomedical research. - Validated experimental protocols for electromagnetic and photonic modulation of mitochondrial b
