at Rady Children's Hospital San Diego. Rady Children’s is the largest free-standing children’s hospital in California, with a total of 551 active beds, and is affiliated with the University of California at San Diego. A new patient care tower will open in 2027, which will house devoted and integrated operative suites and the inpatient care unit for congenital cardiac care. The Heart Institute is one of the core
initiatives at Rady Children’s San Diego and is composed of 30 physicians, supported by over 100 staff. The program provides all levels of congenital heart care, ranging from the fetus to the adult, including transplant, at two main sites: Rady Children’s San Diego and the University of California at San Diego. The program is highly ranked for cardiology and heart surgery (U.S. News & World Report 2024 and 2025) and
performs a total of 350 operations per year, with 250–300 STS Index operations annually. The congenital heart surgeons at Rady Children’s Health San Diego support another 50 to 100 adult congenital operations performed at UC San Diego Medical Center.
